Come On In

Years ago, I came across a video of a children’s Christmas program. It was captioned “when you wanted the role of Joseph but got the Innkeeper”. Mary and Joseph knock on the cardboard door and ask, “do you have a room”, to which the Innkeeper replies “yes, come on in”. Of course, everyone laughed as the program director shouted in hushed tones “there’s no room”. Even though I can’t find the video now all these years later I still chuckle at the thought of this kid sabotaging the play. While it is funny and biblically inaccurate, I think the phrase “come on in” is a wonderful approach to the Christmas Season. During this season we’re all going to be faced with “come on in” decisions. Will we take on the inconvenience and show hospitality? Or will we tell people there is no room? We’ve got rather big services and holidays quickly approaching. I hope that we as a church can be a “come on in” people. Whether it’s a friend, neighbor, or coworker, would you let them know that we’ve got room for them to ‘come on in’.

P.S. In my search for the clip I remembered I stumbled upon the funny rendition of the scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhD9xUUZpM8
